Coronal Polishing Certification

The Coronal Polishing Certificate is an optional certificate for Dental Assistants.  

Definition

"Coronal Polishing" means the removal of plaque and extrinsic stain from exposed natural and restored tooth surfaces using an appropriate rotary instrument with rubber cup or brush and polishing agent. This includes the use of a toothbrush.

Eligibility Requirements

Coronal Polishing certifications issued by another state regulatory agency will not transfer to Texas. 

To qualify for the Texas Coronal Polishing Certificate a dental assistant must successfully complete the following requirements and be able to provide documentation showing successful program completion when submitting their application to the TSBDE:    

  1. Have at least two (2) total years of dental assisting work experience. Experience cannot include time served while attending school or coronal polishing course.
  2. Have successfully completed a minimum of eight (8) hours of clinical and didactic education in coronal polishing taken through a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association and approved by the Board.

Application Process

Reminders
  • You cannot apply online for this certificate.
  • Allow 6 - 8 weeks for processing.
  • If you move after submitting your application, email or call the TSBDE to update your address.
The following must be mailed to the TSBDE:
  1. TSBDE Dental Assistant Application
  2. Application Fee  (Military Active Duty, Veterans and Military Active Duty Spouses are not required to pay the application fee).
  3. A 2x2 passport photo.
  4. Copy of your driver's license, naturalization papers, or passport.
  5. Letter(s), preferably on letterhead, from current or former employers showing proof that you have completed at least two years of dental assisting work experience. Letters should identify the dental professional who employed you.
  6. Course completion document (certificate or letter) proving successful completion of a Coronal Polishing Course approved by the TSBDE.
  7. Copy of your DANB CDA card (if you hold this card).  If you are submitting a DANB card, please note you are also required to complete the TSBDE Jurisprudence Assessment.  The assessment must have been taken within the year prior to submitting your application.
  8. National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Self-Query Report.  The report results must remain in the original sealed envelope.  NPDB self-query reports are valid for 60 days.  You may contact the NPDB at (800) 767-6732 or at https://www.npdb.hrsa.gov/pract/howToGetStarted.jsp.
  9. American Association of Dental Boards (AADB) Self-Query Report.  This report must remain in the original sealed envelope.  Do not mail a copy of an opened report to the TSBDE.  You will only delay the approval process.  You may download the Self-Query form from http://dentalboards.org/clearinghouse/.
