Coronal Polishing Certification

The Coronal Polishing Certificate is an optional certificate for Dental Assistants.  

Definition

"Coronal Polishing" means the removal of plaque and extrinsic stain from exposed natural and restored tooth surfaces using an appropriate rotary instrument with rubber cup or brush and polishing agent. This includes the use of a toothbrush.

Eligibility Requirements

Coronal Polishing certifications issued by another state regulatory agency will not transfer to Texas. 

To qualify for the Texas Coronal Polishing Certificate a dental assistant must successfully complete the following requirements and be able to provide documentation showing successful program completion when submitting their application to the TSBDE:    

  1. Have at least two (2) total years of dental assisting work experience. Experience cannot include time served while attending school or coronal polishing course.
  2. Have successfully completed a minimum of eight (8) hours of clinical and didactic education in coronal polishing taken through a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association and approved by the Board.
  3. Copy of your National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Self-Query Report.  All applicants are required to complete a self-query of the NPDB.  The report results must remain in the original sealed envelope and be attached to your Coronal Polishing Application to the TSBDE.  NPDB self-query reports are valid for 30 days. NPDB charges a minimal fee to furnish this information.   4. Copy of your American Association of Dental Boards (AADB) Clearinghouse Self-Query Report.  Applicants are required to complete a self-query to the AADB Clearinghouse.  The report results must remain in the original sealed envelope and be attached to your Coronal Polishing Application to the TSBDE.   AADB charges a minimal fee to furnish this information.  The AADB self-query form can be downloaded from the AADB website at http://dentalboards.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/AADBSelfQueryForm.pdf.  The AADB self-query form should be mailed to:  American Association of Dental Boards, 211 East Chicago Avenue, Suite 760, Chicago, IL 60611.  The AADB telephone number is (312) 440-7464.

(Important Note:  If you are using one envelope to mail more than one optional certificate application to the TSBDE you only need to mail one copy of your NPDB and AADB Self-Query Reports with your applications.  Optional Certificates Issued by the TSBDE include:  Pit and Fissure Sealants, Coronal Polishing, Nitrous Oxide Monitoring, Registered Dental Assistant (X-Ray) Certificate).

Application Process

Reminders
  • You cannot apply online for this certificate.
  • Allow two weeks for processing.
  • If you move after submitting your application, e-mail or call the TSBDE to update your address.
The following must be mailed to the TSBDE:
  • TSBDE Coronal Polishing Application
  • Application Fee  (Military Active Duty, Veterans and Military Active Duty Spouses are not required to pay the application fee.)
  • Letter(s), preferably on letterhead, from current or former employers showing proof that you have completed at least two years of dental assisting work experience. Letters should identify the dental professional you are/were employed with.
  • Course completion document (certificate or letter) proving successful completion of a Coronal Polishing Course approved by the TSBDE.
