Nitrous Oxide Concious Sedation Monitoring Certification

The Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate is an optional certificate for dental hygienists.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Texas Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate the applicant must:

  1. Complete a Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate Application form.
  2. Pay the application fee by check or money order. Active duty military, veterans and military spouses are not required to pay an application fee.
  3. Successfully complete a current course in Basic Life Support. Online courses that do not include a written assessment and demonstration of skills by the applicant using a practice manikin are not recognized by the TSBDE.
  4. Complete a minimum of 8 hours of didactic education and testing in monitoring the administration of nitrous oxide taken through a CODA-accredited dental, dental hygiene or dental assisting program, approved by the TSBDE.
  5. National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Self-Query.  All applicants are required to complete a self-query of the NPDB.  The report results must remain in the original sealed envelope and be attached to your application to the TSBDE.  NPDB self-query reports are valid for 30 days. NPDB charges a minimal fee to furnish this information.   6. American Association of Dental Boards (AADB) Clearinghouse Self-Query.  Applicants are required to complete a self-query of the AADB Clearinghouse.  The report results must remain in the original sealed envelope and be attached to your application to the TSBDE.   AADB charges a minimal fee to furnish this information.  The AADB self-query form can be downloaded from the AADB website at http://dentalboards.org/clearinghouse/.  The AADB self-query form should be mailed to:  American Association of Dental Boards, 211 East Chicago Avenue, Suite 760, Chicago, IL 60611.  

Application Process

  • Allow 4 - 6 weeks for processing.
  • There is no online application process for this certificate.
  • If you move after submitting your application, email or call the TSBDE to update your address.
Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists who complete a Texas N2O Monitoring Course:

Mail the following to the TSBDE:

  1. TSBDE Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Application.
  2. Application Fee payable by check or money order. Active duty military, veterans and military spouses are not required to pay an application fee.
  3. Proof of successful completion of an Texas Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certification Course approved by the TSBDE. (If you completed the TSBDE N2O Exam prior to February 2007 you should send a copy of your exam results).
  4. NPDB and AADB self-query results.
  5. Copy of current Basic Life Support CPR Card.
Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists who complete a Non-Texas N2O Monitoring Course:

Mail the following to the TSBDE:

  1. TSBDE Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Application.
  2. Application Fee. Active duty military, veterans and military spouses are not required to pay an application fee.
  3. Proof of completion of an CODA-accredited Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certification Course. (Fee Required)
  4. NPDB and AADB self-query results.
  5. Copy of current Basic Life Support CPR Card.
  6. Copy of TSBDE Jurisprudence Assessment for Non-Texas Dental Assistants Seeking N2O Training. (Fee Required)
