Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certification

The Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate is an optional certificate for dental assistants.  

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Texas Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certificate the applicant must:

  1. Complete a Dental Assistant Application form.
  2. Application Fee. Active Duty Military, Veterans and Military Spouses are not required to pay an application fee.
  3. Complete a minimum of 8 hours of didactic education and testing in monitoring the administration of nitrous oxide taken through a CODA-accredited dental, dental hygiene or dental assisting program, approved by the TSBDE.

Reminders:

  • Allow 6 - 8 weeks for processing.
  • There is no online application process for this certificate.
  • If you move after submitting your application, email or call the TSBDE to update your address.
Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists who complete a Texas N2O Monitoring Course

Mail the following to the TSBDE:

  1. A completed Dental Assistant Application.
  2. Application fee payable by check or money order.  Active Duty Military, Veterans and Military Spouses are not required to pay an application fee.
  3. Proof of successful completion of a Texas Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certification Course approved by the TSBDE and completed within five years of submitting the application. 
  4. A 2x2 passport photo.
  5. Copy of your driver's license, naturalization papers, or passport.
  6. Military Active Duty, Veterans or Military Active Duty Spouses must provide a copy of their Military Orders or Military I.D. Card.
  7. National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Self-Query Report. The report results must remain in the original sealed envelope. NPDB self-query reports are valid for 60 days. You may contact the NPDB at 800-767-6732 or at https://www.npdb.hrsa.gov/pract/howToGetStarted.jsp.
  8. American Association of Dental Boards (AADB). This report result must remain in the original sealed envelope. Do not mail TSBDE a copy or an opened query. You will only further delay your process.  You can download the request form from the AADB at http://dentalboards.org/clearinghouse/.
Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists who complete a Non-Texas N2O Monitoring Course

Mail the following to the TSBDE:

  1. A completed Dental Assistant Application.
  2. Application fee payable by check or money order. Active Duty Military, Veterans and Military Spouses are not required to pay an application fee.
  3. Proof of completion of a CODA-accredited Nitrous Oxide Monitoring Certification Course. 
  4. Copy of current Basic Life Support CPR Card.
  5. Copy of TSBDE Jurisprudence Assessment for Non-Texas Dental Assistants Seeking N2O Training. (Fee Required)
  6. Military Active Duty, Veterans or Military Active Duty Spouses must provide a copy of their Military Orders or Military I.D. Card.
